The tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, which has been overwhelmed in recent months by refugees fleeing Tunisia and Libya, is getting some VIP visitors: U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie and the U.N. refugee chief.
Refugee chief Antonio Guterres arrived in Lampedusa on Sunday a few hours ahead of Jolie, who last week traveled to Turkey's border with Syria to meet some of the thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict there.
Guterres has thanked Lampedusa residents for welcoming the migrants and urged Europe to continue keeping its doors open. He says the debate raging in Europe about immigration "doesn't correspond to the reality" given that the number of migrants who have actually arrived is tiny compared to the numbers who have gone elsewhere.
Serbs boo Winehouse: BELGRADE, Serbia —Amy Winehouse has reportedly been booed and jeered at a concert in Serbia's capital that kicked off her European tour. Serbian media described the performance late Saturday at Belgrade's fortress before some 20,000 fans as a "scandal" and a "disaster."
Media reported the singer was an hour late, before stumbling to the stage and mumbling through her songs. She occasionally disappeared, and her band playing instead. The crowd responded angrily. Tickets cost about $57 — very expensive in the country where average salaries are about $428 a month. Winehouse recently spent a week at a rehab program in London. Her 2006's "Back to Black," won her five Grammy Awards, but her music has been overshadowed by drug use and run-ins with the law.
Singer helps raise cancer awareness
ATLANTA —Eddie Montgomery of the country duo Montgomery Gentry thought he was only getting a sore hip checked out when his doctor spotted a "shadow" on his X-ray. It turned out to be prostate cancer. The singer was diagnosed in Novemberand had the tumor surgically removed. Now as a cancer survivor, the 47-year-old Montgomery and partner Troy Gentry want to bring awareness to the disease through a free concert. The concert is after the Atlanta Braves-Texas Rangers game on Sunday in support of Major League Baseball's contest, "My Dad, My MVP."
